The US Navy’s newest SWATH ocean surveillance ship recently left Friede Goldman-Halter’s Pascagoula yard in route for Norfolk.  The USNS Impeccable is equipped with two Omnithruster JT1000TD’s that provide full 360º proportional thrust with fixed speed AC motors.  In sea trials, the ship was able to achieve over 5 knots forward speed utilizing the Omnithruster’s Thrust Director auxiliary propulsion feature.  This performance greatly exceeded the design goals and specification.

The US Coast Guard WAGB-20 “Healy” recently completed its first year in service.  The Healy, equipped with an Omnithruster JT2200IB, is designed to conduct a wide range of research activities, providing more than 4,200 square feet of lab space, numerous electronic sensor systems, oceanographic winches, and accommodations for up to 50 scientists. HEALY is designed to break 4 ½ feet of ice continuously at three knots and can operate in temperatures as low as -50 degrees F.

The Healy is equipped with a “Bow Wash” hull lubrication system, shown here in operation.  The “Bow Wash” system helps lubricate the hull during ice breaking operations.
